This year’s festival, hosted at Detroit’s Tangent Gallery/Hastings Street Ballroom, will be honoring and recognizing Detroit’s own burlesque legend, Toni Elling, who has attended the Michigan Burlesque Festival every year since the inaugural event. Elling became a burlesque dancer in 1960, after being fed up being a telephone operator, and performed until 1974. She still performs from time to time, but never fails to continuously support and inspire burlesque performers across the nation. She was inducted into the Burlesque Hall of Fame in Las Vegas in 2016. The Michigan Burlesque Festival will be presenting Toni Elling with an honor of recognition, honoring her life in the spotlight, and outside of it.

Headliners for this year’s festival include Detroit’s own Holly Hock who founded the Detroit School of Burlesque, is head of the Detroit Grand Cabaret, and produces the very successful Speakeasy Sundays at Cliff Bells (http://www.misshollyhock.com).

Hank E. Panky from Kansas City will also be joining the cast on Saturday night. He is the current reigning King of San Antonio Burlesque and Mr. Leading Man of Hollywood Burlesque. He is also the recipient of the Byrd Productions Physical Theater Scholarship (http://www.hankepanky.net/).

Joining the festival this year will also be the award-winning international burlesque queen Dirty Martini, who will appear both nights of the festival. She hails from New York City, and holds the reigning title of Queen of Burlesque – Miss Exotic World 2004, and has been voted as #1 influential burlesque performer from 2009-2012, and 2016 on 21st Century Burlesque, from fans worldwide. She has currently been seen in Detroit with Dita Von Teese’s tour – The Art of the Teese (http://www.missdirtymartini.com/html/home.html).

Headliners will be joined by a cast of over 50 talented burlesque performers, including Michigan’s own World-Burlypicks champion and Master of Comedy – Kitten Von Mitten and international burlesque sensation Viola Volta. Tickets are available at https://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/3566648 via Brown Paper Tickets.

In addition to performances this year, the Tangent Gallery will also be lined with artists and merchants throughout the night, displaying and selling their crafts, apparel, treats and more. Saturday afternoon will also include classes on the arts and styles of burlesque, hosted by some of the festival’s headliners. Classes include: Shake Shake Shake Senora – The Art of Great Shimmies with Hank E Panky (12pm), Dirty Moves! – Burlesque Dance with Dirty Martini (2:00pm), and Fabulous is a State of Mind with Foxy Tann (4pm).
